Understanding Accelerated Reader (AR)
Every book that has an AR Reading Practice Quiz also has an assigned book level, interest level, and point value. Book level indicates the readability of the text while interest level relates to content.
Color-coded stickers are found on the spines of all AR books. Each grade level has a different color. This enables students to quickly identify appropriate books.
blue-1st
red-2nd
green-3rd
brown-4th
yellow-5th
purple-6th
pink-7th
On the first page or inside front cover of each AR book is a sticker with the book's grade level and maximum point value. Books within each grade level vary in difficulty. For example: a book with a 4.7 book level will be more difficult than a book with a 4.1 book level.
Students can take quizzes in their classrooms or the library. Points are awarded according to the quiz scores.
At the end of each nine weeks students visit the AR store to "buy" things with their points. Points may be saved and carried over until the end of the year. No points can carry over to the next grade.
Most teachers in 1st-5th grade require a certain number of AR books to be read during the year. Ask your child's teacher for any special instructions.
AR point goals are assigned each nine weeks. Goals are based on: the average number of points that can be earned per book in each grade level, the number of AR books required by teachers, the number of AR books read in library, and previous individual performance. Students achieving 100% of their goals will receive an extra reward along with being able to spend their points in the AR store.
Check our AR quiz list for titles before heading to the public library or book store to enhance your child's AR experience.
